Israel and Hamas Agree on Ceasefire and Hostage Release

Israel and Hamas have reportedly reached a ceasefire agreement, along with a deal for the release of hostages, following negotiations mediated by Qatar and the United States.

The ceasefire is expected to take effect on Sunday, pending approval from Israel’s cabinet. Qatar’s Prime Minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Abdul Rahman Al Thani, announced the agreement, expressing optimism for a peaceful resolution.

President Joe Biden welcomed the agreement, emphasizing its potential to end hostilities in Gaza, deliver vital humanitarian aid, and reunite hostages with their families.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu acknowledged ongoing efforts to finalize the terms and expressed gratitude to Biden for his support.

Hamas leader Khalil al-Hayya attributed the agreement to the resilience of the Palestinian people. However, airstrikes in Gaza persisted, with reports of 82 fatalities, including over 30 deaths in Gaza City, following the ceasefire announcement.

Al Jazeera Arabic reported that a strike near the Engineers Union Building in northern Gaza City on Wednesday night resulted in at least 18 casualties.

The initial phase of the agreement includes a six-week truce, hostage exchanges, aid deliveries, and a partial withdrawal of Israeli forces. Further negotiations will focus on broader issues, such as the reconstruction of Gaza and the return of all remaining hostages. Final approval from Israel’s cabinet is anticipated soon.
