NEPRA Issues Generation Licenses to 8 Power Companies Despite Surplus Capacity

Despite having surplus power generation capacity, the National Electric Power Regulatory Authority (NEPRA) granted generation licenses to eight companies during the 2023-24 fiscal year.
Among 13 submitted applications, six solar power companies and two hydropower (hydel) companies were approved, with a combined generation capacity of 255.558 megawatts.
Among the solar companies, YDSA Solar Company was issued a license on September 27, 2023, for a generation capacity of 5.0058 megawatts.
In the hydropower sector, the Pakhtunkhwa Energy Development Organization (PEDO) received two licenses. The first, granted on November 30, 2023, is for a project with an 88-megawatt capacity, while the second, issued on May 22, 2024, is for the Medan hydropower project, which has a generation capacity of 157 megawatts.
